Our last stop in Kampala before heading north to Gulu was at the Bavubuka All Starz house. This establishment was founded by a famous Ugandan hip hop artist who believes in getting the youth out of the streets and providing them a place to find community.
He believes in empowering the next generation through hip hop, music, and the arts.
We heard live performances from mc's sampling "Luga flow flava" :) , saw where the youth did screen-printing (I picked up an awesome t-shirt!), and left feeling really encouraged.
I learned, yet again, how critical a community is to changing how a person views him/herself.
Another mc rapped repeating the word, nakatuka or "I just got here." She went on to explain to us that she finally reached a point in her life where she felt loved, accepted and excited for life and that this feeling took root once she moved into the Bavubuka house.
